Over 100 Years of Caramel Tradition
In the little town of Werther, Germany in 1909, the confectioner Gustav Nebel created the now iconic Butter Candy recipe. He took fresh cream, real butter, refined white sugar, brown rock sugar, a pinch of salt and plenty of time to create the now globally famous Butter Candy. Much has changed since then – and some things have stayed exactly the same as they’ve always been.
The Popular Brand That Unites Generations
The Werther's Echte brand, later marketed as Werther’s Original, becomes increasingly successful. It conquers the hearts of consumers like no other – thanks to a successful cross-generational advertising campaign starring a grandfather and his grandson.

What Makes Werther’s Original Special?
Much has changed since Werther’s Original Hard Candies were first created. But some things have remained exactly the same. Our candies are made with only the finest ingredients, and blended together with the same passion and care our first candy maker, Gustav Nebel, brought to every caramel he crafted. That’s how we make sure every Werther’s Original has the familiar taste you love.
Today’s Werther’s Original
The irresistible caramel hard candy created by Gustav Nebel over 100 years ago is still, to this day, one of the most popular and best selling caramel candies in the world. In fact, people in over 100 countries consider it a favorite, making Werther’s Original the most international of the Storck family of brands.
In 2010, the Karamell-Küche presented by Werther's Original in Epcot® at the Walt Disney World® Resort was established.
Luckily, some things never change – each caramel creation is made with loving care and proudly bears the Werther’s Original name.
